Creekside Trash the Dress Session ♥ Marina + Matthew

Marina and Matthew’s creekside trash the dress session was hands down one of the most fun sessions we’ve had in all the years we’ve been photographing couples together! These two celebrated their wedding day, just a couple of months ago, with the same fun, laid back style, without the mess. If you missed their wedding blog, you can take a peek at the images from their big day here. When they met with us in their search for their wedding photographer, they mentioned right away that they would like to have a messy session after the wedding, and there are no photographers that could have been more up for the challenge than us. We started the session out with some colorful smoke bombs by the creek. They took only about 3.67 seconds to start enjoying the experience. The green ones, were surprisingly vibrant, and packed a big punch! After a couple of different colors, they decided to start mixing them up. We love how awesome the red and blue looked together! And while the smoke bombs were fun, and made some cool atmosphere and color combinations, nothing could have been more awesome than what came next!Holi powder! The evening sun made for some pretty dramatic portraits, and lit up the powder perfectly, as they chucked handfuls of it at each other!Didn’t take long for the white wedding dress and white dress shirt to look more like tie dye.And they never fooled us for a minute, they totally are romantic, because there were plenty of unstaged kisses during this session.Apparently, they just have to…

Riverside Wedding at 1000 Islands Harbor Hotel, Clayton NY ♥ Nikki + Kevin

Nikki and Kevin’s riverside wedding at the 1000 Islands Harbor Hotel, was almost as awesome as the two of them have been to work with. Over the course of the last year, we’ve gotten to know them pretty well, and their personalities have shown through at each and every interaction we have had with them. Looking back at each of our meetings, and their engagement session, they are the poster children for the Yin and Yang. They’ve never been shy about that, or their love for their four-legged beauty, Arya. All three of them were a part of the engagement session we had for them, almost a year ago. If you missed out on seeing their session, you can take a peek at them here. We started out the evening before the wedding at the Edgewood Resort for their rehearsal dinner. There, we had a beautiful view of the majestic Boldt Castle right across the river. The morning of the wedding began with hair and makeup provided by Syracuse Makeup Artistry, in the comfort of the hotel.Nikki and Kevin had spectacular views to enjoy the morning of their wedding, overlooking the St. Lawrence River, as well as the site where their ceremony would take place in just a few hours.Getting some of their wedding day jitters out of the way, they chose to have a “First Look” Session, for a more intimate and quiet look at each other before the wedding ceremony. It was pretty overcast and cloudy during their first look, but…As it often happens the sun made an appearance, as…

Lakeside Engagement Session, Ontario, NY ♥ Christina & Conor

We had an epic evening with Christina and Conor for their lakeside engagement session in Ontario. They chose to have their session overlooking the beautiful Lake Ontario, on a privately-owned family cottage. The cottage, nestled in a quiet, wooded area, made for a peaceful and romantic setting for their portraits. No shortage of paths, greenery, and charm, it provided the perfect backdrop for their portraits celebrating their engagement. The lake views were breathtaking, giving the couple something to enjoy, and us some great opportunities to spice up their portraits! The photos by the rocks are some of our favorites – don’t they look so adorable together? The setting sun made for some beautiful warm light, and the skies above the water looked more like paintings. We had such a great time with them, and can’t wait for their wedding next year! It’s always a pleasure to return to one of our favorite venues, and with this sweet couple it’s sure to be an amazing day! Congratulations, Christina and Conor! Lakeside Wedding at Bristol Harbour Resort, Canandaigua NY ♥ Caitlin + John

Caitlin and John’s lakeside wedding at the Bristol Harbour Resort, in Canandaigua was the kind that fairy tales are made of. Caitlin reached out to us after being referred from clients who had recently gotten married. The irony was, that same client also referred us to another friend named Kaitlyn who also was getting married on the same day. After a few enjoyable chats with her, however, Caitlin got to us first. Kaitlyn, if you’re out there reading this, we hope that your wedding day was fabulous! Soon afterward, we got the pleasure of meeting John when we had their engagement session, by the same breath-taking lake. We really enjoyed spending the afternoon with them, getting to know them, and watching them kill a bottle of wine in record time. If you missed seeing their engagement portraits, you can look back and enjoy them here. Caitlin got ready in one of the adorable, little cottages on site at the resort, with fantastic views overlooking the lake. John spent his preparation time in one of the rustic rooms in the hotel. The gift of two fragrant, snow-white gladiola arrangements were sent to Caitlin on the morning of the wedding, which made the perfect addition to their reception decor. One of the most precious moments for a mother is being a part of their daughter’s wedding day. These radiant ladies looked so stunning, these portraits could not be passed up, before we headed over for the first look. We were taking bets (no, not really) on whether John would shed some tears…

Rustic, Country Wedding in Hunt, NY ♥ Cortney + Shawn

Cortney and Shawn’s rustic, country wedding was a dream made into a reality, with a lot of hard work, long hours, and plenty of planning. A wedding with this much attention to detail, doesn’t happen without the help of many hands, and loved ones that wanted nothing more than to see their dream wedding come true. They had no shortage on that, that’s for sure! Most often, our clients are from all over the country, and meet with us by Skype or by phone, but we met with Cortney and her mom, and mother-in-law to-be at a Dunkin’ Donuts over coffee while we were on our way to an engagement session, headed in their direction. Though our meeting place was nothing too fancy, we didn’t take too long to figure out how much their wedding planning meant to all the ladies, and how their search for a photographer was at the top of their priority list. Cortney, herself, is a photographer, so she knew and valued the work that goes into what we do. Being chosen to photograph the wedding of another photographer is an honor,  and we were delighted to be chosen to document their day. We finally got the chance to meet Shawn when we photographed their engagement session last fall. If you missed the blog post with their session highlights, you can enjoy those here. Fast forward to the wedding day, the ladies got ready at the beautiful Genessee Falls Inn, where we lodged the night before. Debora, who tirelessly manages the hotel, gave us the grand…

Wedding at The LakeWatch Inn, Ithaca, NY ♥ Elizabeth + Marcus

As wedding photographers, our clients and our work bring us all over Upstate New York, but one of our most treasured favorite places is the LakeWatch Inn, in Ithaca. When Elizabeth and Marcus contacted us in their search for a wedding photographer, we were not only excited to have the chance of photographing there again, we also fell instantly in love with them as a couple. There is just something about them, that makes everyone who’s met them, stop and take pause. Though our first meeting was over a Skype session, everything there is to love about them came through, just in the way they looked at each other. Our first chance at meeting them was when we traveled to Brooklyn for their engagement session. If you haven’t yet seen the images from their session, you can enjoy them here. We started out with Elizabeth at the Satori Salon where the ladies received a little bit of pampering. The King Suite at Hotel Ithaca made the perfect place for Elizabeth to slip into her stunning wedding gown, before heading over to the Cornell Plantations for their “first look”. Their wedding programs predicted it exactly right: Elizabeth was the one in white, and Marcus was the one in tears. But he wasn’t the only one… We then headed over to LakeWatch for the ceremony, and we were excited to see the beautiful new landscaping and walkway that would now be the aisle for their outdoor weddings. Their ceremony was absolutely perfect, and just watching the way they looked at each other…

Wedding at Longfellows, Saratoga Springs, NY ♥ Stefanie + Jason

Writing wedding blogs is most often a bittersweet task. When we connect with great clients, and the wedding day arrives, we are excited, charged, and sometimes even just as anxious, since we want nothing less than a perfect day for them. Most of our clients book engagement sessions with us, and build relationships for often times a year or more. Our journey with Stefanie and Jason began over two years ago, as they planned their wedding before a big move. We planned for their engagement session to take place right before, and had a wonderful evening with them and captured some of our favorite images. If you haven’t yet seen the images from that session, you can find them here.  So now, as we put together their wedding blog, though it’s a happy and joyous occasion, it brings with it a little sadness, since we know that our journey with them will soon be coming to a close. BUT, let’s not dwell on that – instead let’s focus on the beautiful day they had in Saratoga Springs! Stefanie and Jason, through no fault of their own went through some twists and turns in their wedding planning. Including a date and venue change, which they did flawlessly. Their decision could not have been better and their wedding at Longfellows was even better than I think they ever could have imagined it. With everything right on-site, there was little stress, except for the threat of rain, which passed in just a few minutes. Their outdoor ceremony was ideal with cooler temperatures, and…

Wedding at Camp Brockway, Manlius, NY ♥ Marina + Matthew

When we first met with Marina and Matthew for their wedding at Camp Brockway, we could tell right away what a fun-loving couple they were. It didn’t take any effort at all to be excited for them, and for their wedding day. We just knew it was going to be a laid back day with lots of fun and laughter. And might I add, not all couples can pull off a “signature red” for their wedding color, either. These two did it perfectly! Camp Brockway is a rustic venue, nestled in a private, wooded area at Pratt’s Falls, in Manlius. Coincidentally, this is the place where Colleen shot her very first wedding ever, some many moons ago. It was a delight to return there again, now shooting digital instead of film. Not much has changed there, it’s still the same sweet little out-of-the-way place it’s always been. With a place like Camp Brockway, it’s a lot like having a clean canvas, to do with it whatever you like. Marina and Matthew really outdid themselves with all of the wonderful fine details that they crafted! It set the tone for a fun and light-hearted celebration. Their short, but sweet ceremony lead way to an evening of great food, conversation, and lots of dancing! Make no mistake, it was a hot and muggy day, peppered with a little rain, but none of that stopped them or their guests from having a wonderful time. Music was provided by Black Tie Entertainment, and the flawless coordination was provided by Megan of MLH Events, with…

Engagement Session at Beaver Lake, Baldwinsville, NY ♥ Heather + Adam

It was the perfect night for an engagement session at Beaver Lake. Sounds kind of like the opening line of a cheesy mystery novel, but rather than being fiction, it’s 100% accurate. Let’s be honest though, Heather and Adam were not completely sold on the idea of even having one at first. And this one, once it was actually on the books, almost got canceled. Mother Nature can, and will dish out whatever kind of weather she darn well feels like. The day of Heather and Adam’s session, a huge storm cell was making it’s way across Central New York. While weather really doesn’t scare us off much, it did look like it was going to be a complete washout. Fearing that a session at Beaver Lake would yield nothing but soggy results, we called and left a message that maybe it might be a good idea to consider rescheduling. That was a call we were not too eager to make, since in all of our six years, we’ve had this many engagement session reschedules: 0. Yup, zero. Even on days that it’s rained, the precipitation has stopped long enough to complete our sessions, and then delivered the absolute most beautiful sunsets. And well, this time was no different. A couple of hours later, after completely obsessing over the Doppler, we made another call to renege. Thankfully, Heather was completely on board to keep the session time, and we went ahead as originally planned. Sometimes, the term “engagement session” scares people into thinking that it’s going to be some rigid…

First Birthday Cake Smash! ♥ Jackson + his cousins!

A very sweet little boy is celebrating his very first birthday today! Jackson and his first cousins came into our studio for a first birthday cake smash celebration, and all three of them enjoyed a little (okay maybe a lot) of cake and frosting! We really had a blast photographing the babies, and watching them make an adorable mess out of the cake, themselves, and each other! Thank you all for coming in to play with us, and we wish Jackson a very happy first birthday, with many more to come! Portrait Session in Cherry Valley, NY ♥ Amy + Liam

It seems like forever since the weather was nice enough to have an outdoor session! So we were really looking forward to our return visit to Cherry Valley, and the beautiful property we’ve become so familiar with! It was a warm, but beautiful evening spent with Amy, Liam and Lael, as we wandered about inside and out capturing the beauty of such a sweet family, at the home that has so much history for them and their family. The lush green fields filled with dandelions, the cattle and the rustic barns made for an idyllic backdrop for their session. Once the sun set behind the trees, darkening the valley, we went indoors for a few more portraits inside the house. It almost feels incorrect calling it a house, since once inside, it feels like a step back in time, filled with history and memories, and mementos of a bygone era. Thank you Amy and Liam, for inviting us back to share a lovely evening with you all – it was such a pleasure! We are looking forward to coming back again this fall, to celebrate another wonderful wedding, and see some familiar faces! Can’t wait! 2015 – A year in review by Solas Studios Photography

As 2015 winds down, and we prepare to wrap up our fifth year as professional photographers, we want to reflect back on the people, places and things we’ve photographed in the last year. 2015 has brought us to many new adventures, faces, and places that have been a pleasure to capture. We’ve visited many of New York’s beautiful lakes (some twice), some of our favorite venues (some twice), gotten very wet at some weddings, met some pretty cool animals (some in the form of cardboard cut-outs), made our fourth trip to NYC together, spent time playing with water in the studio, made friends with a lot of wee ones, and logged a lot of miles. We worked with our second and third “Stefanies”, had three “Adams”, engagement sessions with two “Ginger” grooms-to-be in one weekend, and currently have a LONG list of expectant past clients (what’s in the water these days??).We’ve seen so many smiles, lots of happy tears, and captured a plethora of silly faces. Sometimes, it hardly feels like work. Our kitty, Smeagol, who had two emergency surgeries right in the middle of a a busy wedding season, is now doing well after giving us a few panic attacks. Thank you, to everyone who showed concern, and wished him well while he was recovering! Our year was exciting, fun, and at times pretty crazy, but we couldn’t be more thankful for all of you who were a part of it. Without all of you, we would just be sitting at home taking selfies, and  photos of Smeagol (and he loathes…
