Engagement Session at Beaver Lake, Baldwinsville, NY ♥ Heather + Adam

It was the perfect night for an engagement session at Beaver Lake. Sounds kind of like the opening line of a cheesy mystery novel, but rather than being fiction, it’s 100% accurate. Let’s be honest though, Heather and Adam were not completely sold on the idea of even having one at first. And this one, once it was actually on the books, almost got canceled. Mother Nature can, and will dish out whatever kind of weather she darn well feels like. The day of Heather and Adam’s session, a huge storm cell was making it’s way across Central New York. While weather really doesn’t scare us off much, it did look like it was going to be a complete washout. Fearing that a session at Beaver Lake would yield nothing but soggy results, we called and left a message that maybe it might be a good idea to consider rescheduling. That was a call we were not too eager to make, since in all of our six years, we’ve had this many engagement session reschedules: 0. Yup, zero. Even on days that it’s rained, the precipitation has stopped long enough to complete our sessions, and then delivered the absolute most beautiful sunsets. And well, this time was no different. A couple of hours later, after completely obsessing over the Doppler, we made another call to renege. Thankfully, Heather was completely on board to keep the session time, and we went ahead as originally planned. Sometimes, the term “engagement session” scares people into thinking that it’s going to be some rigid…

2014 – A year in review by Solas Studios Photography

As we gear up for our final wedding of 2014, we want to take a moment to reflect on all of the beautiful people we have had the pleasure of meeting, and working with this year. Some of them have ended their journey with us, while others are just beginning. But ALL of them have enriched our lives in ways that we could never put into words, and would fail if we tried. Over the last year, we have taken over 20,000 photographs. No, that’s not a typo. We’ve photographed families, high school seniors, landscapes, couples, weddings, and yes – a couple of our own personal photos. We spent most of the last 364 days devoted to what we love. We’ve also eaten, slept, and played a few video games. We’ve photographed in the wind and rain, in the sweltering heat, in 20 degree temperatures, during the day, late at night, been eaten alive by mosquitoes, and the list goes on. But, we wouldn’t trade it for the world, because we live to love what we do. We’ve met people and seen things that we never would have, if it weren’t for the people who found us, and invited us into their lives. Those who have entrusted us to photograph them are owed a huge thank-you, from the bottom of our hearts. We couldn’t have had such an amazing year without you. Those who have yet to be photographed, have much to look forward to in 2015! We are excited to make another 20,000 photographs before the year’s end. Maybe…

Studio head shots with Paula, Baldwinsville, NY

We had the pleasure of a visit from Paula recently, and we were delighted to have a chance do some portraits for her! It’s been a while since she’s been in front of my camera, but, yep – she’s still a hoot! Lots of laughs to be had that day, and we even had her friend, Andy, step in for a couple shots as well. Nothing more fun than really capturing a person’s genuine personality, and we think it really showed through in the portraits! Greg was happy to assist that day, and what was meant to be a lighting test shot, wound up in the gallery, since it made me giggle when I came across that photo in post processing! His squint for the light he knew was coming, coupled with the happy subjects in the background was too funny not to share! (Don’t tell Greg!) Thank you, Paula for all the laughs, and spending some time with us – it was a lot of fun! Le gach dea-ghuí, (With all good wishes) Colleen (& Greg)…

Baker High School Senior Ball 2014, Baldwinsville, NY

Sometimes, we shoot things that are just too awesome not to share, even when they aren’t paying clients! I couldn’t help myself from wanting to share with our readers and fans, a very proud moment as a Mom. My first-born, Joe, recently attended his senior ball, and of course, that was a great opportunity to take some photos! It was a gorgeous evening, and joined by some of his closest friends, we took some photos right here in Baldwinsville, behind the beautiful Mohegan Manor. It’s a popular wedding reception venue as well, for anyone looking! Anyone who knows him, knows that Joe rarely can smile without making goofy faces, but when he gives me a real smile like the black and white photo by the wall, I consider it a mission accomplished! Everyone looked fantastic, and there were a lot of proud parents and grandparents there to share in the moment. Joe’s grandparent’s also bought him a really cool Batman watch to wear to the ball. Earlier this year, he made the decision to cut his hair, which was admittedly longer than mine! It’s so nice to see him looking so grown-up and polished, and ready to take on the world! He actually does clean up pretty nicely, and really did make his Mama proud! Thanks for letting me share this with you, and allowing me to show off one of my greatest masterpieces! (The other one is blonde!) Le gach dea-ghuí, (With all good wishes) Colleen…

Jada’s 5th Birthday Portrait Session ♥ Baldwinsville, NY

We have been very lucky to know this little princess, since she was just a few months old. She’s been in front of our cameras several times, and we just adore her! We were delighted to be able to shoot some portraits of her in honor of her 5th birthday! Bright, and full of energy, she came in prepared to entertain US! And boy, did she do a great job at that! She kept us pretty busy, and had no problem flashing those pretty smiles and funny faces at us. After we got through the cupcakes, she wanted to play dress up! She had us in stitches with all of her antics! We finished up the session with a few “Mommy and Me” portraits, that are enough to melt your heart. This freckle-faced, blue-eyed, beauty is welcome to come see us any time! Thank you for coming to play with us again, Jada, and we hope to see you again next year! Engagement Session at Inner Harbor, Syracuse, NY ♥ Megan + Pat

Now, here are a couple of troupers for you. Not only did these two bundle up for one of the snowiest and coldest days and places for an E-session, but they also missed an SU basketball game just to come out and play with us! Many folks have a little (or a lot) of anxiety about having their photos taken. Not Megan and Pat! They were like naturals for the camera, despite the bitter cold. Our first stop was at the Inner Harbor in Syracuse, where in the summer there’s a lot of activity and enjoyment. The day we met up with them for their session, we were pretty much the only crazy people there. And with good reason! But Mother Nature gave some pretty nice snowflakes for our trouble. We warmed up (okay not really) with some photos by the bridge, until some snow throwing broke out. The snow was not good for packing, and it was quite evident that Pat was not a huge fan of the gesture. No worries, Megan got her fair share of some snow in the face, too. It was all in good fun, and after Megan managed to clean Pat up, we headed over to the old loading building for a few more photos of the love birds. By that time, we all needed a little warm-up, and headed out to Baldwinsville for some good hot chocolate and coffee while we waited for dark to come. Once we thawed out, we went to one of our favorite landmarks – the Baldwinsville bridge! After…
