2015 – A year in review by Solas Studios Photography

As 2015 winds down, and we prepare to wrap up our fifth year as professional photographers, we want to reflect back on the people, places and things we’ve photographed in the last year. 2015 has brought us to many new adventures, faces, and places that have been a pleasure to capture. We’ve visited many of New York’s beautiful lakes (some twice), some of our favorite venues (some twice), gotten very wet at some weddings, met some pretty cool animals (some in the form of cardboard cut-outs), made our fourth trip to NYC together, spent time playing with water in the studio, made friends with a lot of wee ones, and logged a lot of miles. We worked with our second and third “Stefanies”, had three “Adams”, engagement sessions with two “Ginger” grooms-to-be in one weekend, and currently have a LONG list of expectant past clients (what’s in the water these days??).We’ve seen so many smiles, lots of happy tears, and captured a plethora of silly faces. Sometimes, it hardly feels like work. Our kitty, Smeagol, who had two emergency surgeries right in the middle of a a busy wedding season, is now doing well after giving us a few panic attacks. Thank you, to everyone who showed concern, and wished him well while he was recovering! Our year was exciting, fun, and at times pretty crazy, but we couldn’t be more thankful for all of you who were a part of it. Without all of you, we would just be sitting at home taking selfies, and  photos of Smeagol (and he loathes…

2014 – A year in review by Solas Studios Photography

As we gear up for our final wedding of 2014, we want to take a moment to reflect on all of the beautiful people we have had the pleasure of meeting, and working with this year. Some of them have ended their journey with us, while others are just beginning. But ALL of them have enriched our lives in ways that we could never put into words, and would fail if we tried. Over the last year, we have taken over 20,000 photographs. No, that’s not a typo. We’ve photographed families, high school seniors, landscapes, couples, weddings, and yes – a couple of our own personal photos. We spent most of the last 364 days devoted to what we love. We’ve also eaten, slept, and played a few video games. We’ve photographed in the wind and rain, in the sweltering heat, in 20 degree temperatures, during the day, late at night, been eaten alive by mosquitoes, and the list goes on. But, we wouldn’t trade it for the world, because we live to love what we do. We’ve met people and seen things that we never would have, if it weren’t for the people who found us, and invited us into their lives. Those who have entrusted us to photograph them are owed a huge thank-you, from the bottom of our hearts. We couldn’t have had such an amazing year without you. Those who have yet to be photographed, have much to look forward to in 2015! We are excited to make another 20,000 photographs before the year’s end. Maybe…

2013 – A Year in Excellence | Solas Studios Photography

As the 365 days that collectively made up 2013 come to an end, a good lot of human beings reflect on the events that took place in their life. Socially, it has become common for folks to utter things like, “Good riddance”, “Hoping that next year is better” or “Don’t let the door hit you on the way out”. Everyone has those feelings at one time or another, and it’s normal to feel the burden of everyday trials and tribulations.  But the reality is that each day is a gift, and the sum of our life is compiled of the choices that we, ourselves, make. So when we usher out the current year with haste, what we are really doing is trying to rid ourselves of the “less than favorable” choices we made in the 364 previous days. OR, we are focusing on the losses. Be it a loss of a close friend or relative, loss of a job, loss of our own spirit, and quite frankly after the holidays, the loss of our sanity. Reflecting on these things is imperative to growth as individuals. We look at the choices we made that didn’t give us the results that we were looking for, and the ones that yielded perfect results. The key is to find that balance that allows us to see the areas in which we excelled, and the ones we fell short on to make moves to do better in the New Year. Many folks make resolutions, and within the first two weeks, dump them like a stale…

Solas Studios’ Hallowe’en Special

Because of the creepy nature of the photographs, we thought All Hallows’ Eve would be a perfect time to show off one of our recent commissions! We had the pleasure of photographing some pretty cool places in Central New York, which are well known for raising the hair on a few arms. Ours included (Or maybe just Colleen’s)! The Onondaga Historical Association was looking for some photos to include in their exhibit for the Syracuse Stage production of Blithe Spirit. Their request was for some photos at Oakwood Cemetery, well known for some local urban legends, and has even been the focus of paranormal investigations for its purported ghostly activity. Let’s just say, that after dark, the beautiful and peaceful Oakwood grounds, will leave you feeling anything but peaceful. But it should did make for some pretty awesome photos! The second location that OHA asked us to shoot was the notorious “13 Curves” also known as Cedarvale Road.  Known for its sighting of the “Lady in White”, “Phantom Bride”, “The Bloody Bride” or other variations of the tale, 13 Curves, on foot at night is not for the lily-livered. As the folklore tells it, a newly married couple traveling down Cedarvale road lost control of their car and crashed, which inevitably resulted in the ghostly haunt of the bride searching for her lost love. She is reported to be seen sauntering down the road on Halloween night around midnight. Anyone looking to prove or dispute this local legend will have their chance tonight! We recommend being very careful if you…

A few words from us about the Newtown, Connecticut tragedy

There are no words significant enough to express our sadness over the senseless tragedy that affected the lives of so many, in Newtown, Connecticut yesterday. Just to say that our thoughts are with them, just doesn’t feel like enough. Each day, we wake up and go about our normal daily lives, never knowing what things we will encounter.  That “not knowing” can be a blessing, and a curse all at the same time.  When something like this happens, people struggle to find the right words to comfort those who have suffered a loss. They try to find ways to lift the spirits of those affected, to distract them from that which has brought them so much pain and strife. It’s never an easy task. When the loss is that of a child, or many children, and adults, it rips apart a community. Sending those people reeling into a dark place; a nightmare that those affected only wish to wake from.  There is no taking it back. Of the 28 souls lost or taken yesterday, thousands will be affected. Many of them, affected for the remainder of their lives. Some of them will never recover from the trauma that they endured. So while we watch or read the news, and our thoughts go toward those who were lost, remember most those who will live forever in grief, fear, and contempt. Keep them in your thoughts, your prayers, and most of all, your hearts. Some have said that this is the worst time of year for a tragedy, and while their expression…
